The Dreams of Men and Women

It would be fair to say that in many areas of life, men and women are very different. But who would have thought that even their nightly dreams would turn out to be so diverse?

A long-term study in Germany involving several thousand adults came to the following conclusion: While men tend to dream about power, sex and their job, women dream predominantly about family members and feelings. Moreover, men’s dreams have more men than women in them, and their nightly thoughts often revolve around achieving goals.

And even though the emancipation of the past 40 years has left its mark in so many areas of life, this is not at all the case with dreams. German sleep researchers compared interviews about the content of dreams from the years 1956, 1979, 1982 and 2000. These interviews showed that the differences between what the sexes dream about have remained the same for more than 40 years. Although the working world is an inherent part of many women’s lives, they still dream about their job less frequently than men.
